It’s what we do
The Scottish Police Federation has just launched our #itswhatwedo campaign. This campaign is designed to highlight the multitude of different considerations police officers face when dealing with what start as the most routine of calls.
Police officers are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job. We deal with events and tragedies others struggle to imagine. We place ourselves in harm’s way so others don’t have to. We make split second decisions every day and we know our every action and reaction is subject to the most enormous scrutiny.
We have all met the armchair experts on policing and we have all see examples of split second decisions being micro analysed weeks, months and years after the actual incident. Commenting on policing and criticising police officers is easy but actually doing our job isn’t. We are honest enough to say that we don’t always get it right for we are human like everyone else. We have mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, we have families who love us and who we love back. We may be fallible but we are there. We keep our communities safe.
The videos on which the campaign is based places anybody in the shoes of the police officer. I would encourage you to promote these videos and share them far and wide. Get them watched and then ask what would you do? What would you do if you were Robert? What would you do if you were Andrew? And what would you do if you were Maggie? We all know we will likely be criticised for whatever decision we take but hopefully these scenarios will give a real insight into what a bloody hard job we have.
The videos are simply outstanding and a massive thank you is extended to all who took part and in particular to the creative geniuses at Tinker Taylor TV, Brain Candy Films and Simon Ellis Films for making them what they are.
