Cressida Dick: I want 6,000 of PM’s new 20,000 police officers to be in London
Scotland Yard is seeking about 6,000 more officers from the Government’s policing uplift to take its numbers to a record high, Cressida Dick said today. The Met Commissioner said her force was on course to have 31,000 officers by the end of December, and was aiming to gain about 6,000 of the 20,000 officers promised nationwide by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. She said this would give a likely total of about 37,000 Met officers — an all-time peak. The news follows Met numbers recently falling as low as 30,000, and complaints by Ms Dick that the reduction in officers under Theresa May had contributed to a surge in violent crime. Ms Dick said she was “delighted” that there was now “recognition that we need extra numbers”.
