Victims of wolf-whistles and catcalls should dial 999, a police chief says. Alison Hernandez said authorities are “a bit clueless” about the level of the problem but urged those feeling unsafe to call the cops. The PCC for Devon and Cornwall made the comments as the Law Commission decides if misogyny and ageism should be added to the list of hate crimes. Officials are divided on the issue with some arguing that hate crime policies take officers away from investigating acts of violence and burglaries.

The number of Brits caught with a knife or dangerous weapon soared to the highest in nearly a decade this year after a stop and search crackdown by police. There were 22,306 knife and offensive weapon crimes committed in the12 months to June, according to Ministry of Justice (MoJ) figures. This is the highest level recorded since 2010 and it was more than 1,000 higher than the previous year.
